The boys sat between the trees on the dark earth, looking at the egg in Eugene’s hand.

“Do you think the bird made the hole when it hatched?” asked Miles.

“I guess it could have,” Eugene replied slowly, biting his lip.

“It’s so big! What bird do you think the egg is from?”

Eugene turned it over in his hand, frowning.

“Dad will know,” Eugene said.

Handing the egg to Miles, Eugene took the radio from his bag and called Dad.

“Dad! Dad! Do you hear me, over?”

“Hi, buddy. What’s up, over?” Dad’s voice crackled back.

“We found something you need to see, over.”

“Where are you, over?”

“We’re in the trees between the house and the sand beach, over.”

“I’m in Work Shed Three behind the house. Can you bring it up here, over?”

Dad never let them go to the work sheds!

Eugene looked at Miles.

“Say yes!” Miles whispered.

“Yes, we’re on our way, over,” said Eugene into the radio.

“Great. Over and out,” ended Dad.

The boys clambered out from beneath the trees, cradling the egg, and followed their new goat track back to the house.

When they arrived at Work Shed Three, Miles knocked and Dad opened the door with a smile. It disappeared when he saw the egg.

“Did you boys do that?” he asked.

“No!” replied Eugene.

“We found it in the bush.”

“I saw it first,” said Miles.

“We wanted to see what it was so picked it up. We called you as soon as we saw it was an egg,” Eugene said.

Both boys talked over each other to tell Dad the story. “We followed our goat track back here,” said Miles.

“You saw a goat?”
